2019 James Wood HS Scholarships


PLEASE NOTE:  ANY SCHOLARSHIPS REQUESTING AN ESSAY SHOULD BE DONE IN THE STUDENT'S GOOGLE DOCS AND FORWARDED TO:  NORDMANM@FCPSK12.NET.  ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE DONE IN THE STUDENT'S GOOGLE ACCOUNT.


1. Philip Banning Scholarship
 

Available to: James Wood High School 

The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • Be enrolled in a college preparatory program at JWHS. 
  • Be a major contributor in an athletic program at JWHS and have earned a letter in the program in which he/she participated. 
  • Be of good moral character and have no major discipline record at the high school. 
  • If two student athletes have the same scholastic average, the selection committee will determine the recipient based on the criterion in item #1. 
  • If the student athlete with the highest scholastic average receives a substantial scholarship from another source, the student athlete with the second highest scholastic average will receive the award provided the criteria for the scholarship have been met. 
  • The recipient shall have been accepted to college and must enter in the fall following graduation. The money will be given to the student upon enrollment.

2.  Brumback Family Agricultural Scholarship 
 
Available to: James Wood High School and Sherando High School

The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • Be a graduating senior from either James Wood or Sherando High School; 
  • Attend an accredited institution of higher learning offering a two- or four-year degree, including a vocational institution; 
  • Intend to study in an agriculture related field; 
  • Have studied agriculture for at least two years in high school, preferably in his/her junior/senior years; and 
  • Have a grade point average of at least 2.5.

 

3. Jim and Eleanor Casey Scholarship 
Available to:  James Wood, Millbrook, and Sherando High School
The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • An athlete of good character..  

4. Eugene B Cooper Scholarship
Available to:  James Wood, Millbrook, Sherando High School
The recipient must meet the following criteria:
  •   A graduating student in good standing

  •       The student has been accepted by an accredited college, university, or trade school

  •      The student must possess good character traits

  •     The applicant must include an original essay (no more than two pages in length() to address the reason they are worthy of the scholarship

  •  If the student selected is awarded a full scholarship apart from this award the scholarship shall be returned to the Foundation and replaced in the Eugene B Cooper fund

5. Hunter T Crane Memorial Scholarship 

Available to: James Wood High School and Millbrook High School, and Sherando High School 

The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • A graduating student in good standing 
  • Has been accepted and plans to attend an accredited college, university, or trade school 
  • Must possess good character traits 
  • Must include an essay, no more than 2 pages in length, entitled “My Life Rules”


5. Crosen Family Scholarship 

Available to: James Wood High School and Millbrook High School and Sherando High School 

The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • Participated in Athletics 
  • Financial Need 
  • Work and/or Community Participation/Volunteerism
6. Crown Trophy Entrepreneurial Scholarship
Available to: James Wood High School, Millbrook High School and Sherando High School (one to each school)
The recipient must meet the following criteria:
  • Be starting a small business after graduation
  • Provide a one or two page business plan
  • Show how the scholarship funds will be spent
  • Show the time-frame for the business start-up
  • Explain what or who inspired  your desire to start the business

7. Alan Devers Memorial Scholarship 

Available to: James Wood High School 

The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • Graduating senior from James Wood High School who is preferably a key club member, 
  • Is service-minded, 
  • Is in good academic standing, 
  • And who has demonstrated community service participation acknowledged by school staff.

8. P. Wendell Dick Scholarship 

Available to: James Wood High School 

The Recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • Highly motivated – will attend and complete college 
  • Good character 
  • Sets a good example for others 
  • Honest 
  • Positive attitude 
  • Financial need 
9. Philip Dale Shutters Farley Memorial Scholarship

Available to:  James Wood High School

The recipient must meet the following criteria:

·         Overall 2.5 GPA or higher as verified by JWHS administrators.

·         Proof of need with family income not to exceed $60,000 unless special conditions apply

·         Priority given to qualified FULL-TIME students attending (in this order)

1.    Virginia Tech

2.    WVU

3.    Fairmont State3 University

4.    Any other 4 year VIRGINIA university

5.    Any non- Virginia  university

·         Field of Study (in this order)

1.    Mining Engineering

2.    Any other Engineering course

3.    Business Administration

4.    Accounting

5.    Pre-Med

6.    Nursing

7.    Education

 

10. Rhett Martin Goldizen Art Memorial Scholarship 

Available to: James Wood High School 

The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • James Wood graduating senior in good standing 
  • Has been accepted and plans to attend an accredited college, university or trade school to study visual arts 
  • Must possess good character traits

11. Amy Walker Harlow Memorial Scholarship 

Available to: James Wood High School 

The recipient must meet the following criteria:
  • A graduating James Wood High School student 
  • Demonstrated financial need 
  • Active in the Pony Club, 4-H, or FFA.

12. James Wood High School Class of 1963 

Available to: James Wood High School 

The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • Student shall be of good character 
  • Student shall have demonstrated leadership qualities 
  • Student shall have maintained a minimum grade pt average of 2.5 
  • Student shall have applied and been accepted to an institution of higher education or continued learning 
  • Student shall have financial need

13. James Wood High School Class of 1964

Available to: James Wood High School 

The recipient must meet the following criteria: 

·         Graduate from James Wood High School

·         Attendance at an institution of higher learning, including a vocational institution

·         Consideration shall be given to any descendant from the members of the James Wood Class of 1964


14. James Wood High School Class of 1965 

Available to: James Wood High School 

The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • Attendance at an institution of higher learning including a vocational, training, or technical institution. 
  • Student shall be of good character 
  • Student shall have maintained a minimum grade point average of 2.5 
  • Student shall have applied for and been accepted to an institution of higher education or continued learning 
  • Student shall have demonstrated leadership qualities 
  • All else being equal, financial need should be considered

15.  James Wood High School Class of 1969 Memorial Scholarship

Available to:  James Wood High School

 The recipient must meet the following criteria: 

  • Financial need
  • Engaged in school clubs, extracurricular activities or other community service for two or more years
  • Provide an essay (no more than one page) titled "How  James Wood has prepared me to pursue my dreams and aspirations

16. James Wood Class of 1984 Scholarship 


Available to: James Wood High School 

The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • Attendance at an institution of higher learning learning, including a vocational institution 
  • A James Wood High School graduate based on financial need who has demonstrated a desire to further his/her education 

17. James Wood Class of 2014 Scholarship 

Available to: James Wood High School 

The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • GPA of 2.75 or greater 
  • Active in a school club or sport (minimum of one year) 
  • Essay of NO MORE than two pages on “What Being A James Wood Colonel Means To Me”

18. James Wood Class of 2015 Scholarship 
Available to: James Wood High School 
The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
  • GPA of 2.75 or greater 
  • Active in a school club or sport (minimum of one year) 
  • Essay of NO MORE than two pages on “How Does Optimism Benefit my Community?”

     


    19.  Mueller-Peluso Memorial Scholarship

    Available to: James Wood High School 

    The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
    • student must be attending a 4 year college or university
    • must be majoring in Mechanical, Electrical, Structueral or Industrial Engineering
    • based on financial need
    • must have demonstrated a desire to further his/her education
    20. Northern Shenandoah Valley Master Gardeners Association Scholarship
    Available to:  James Wood High School, Millbrook High School, Sherando High School

    The recipient must meet the following criteria:
    • Career goal must be horticulture or in an agriculture-related field
    • Must have taken at least 3 high school classes in any of the following subjects: biology, agriculture, horticulture, earth science, environmental science or a similar field of study
    • Are currently, or have been a member/volunteer of an agriculture-related program through a community service organization, cooperative extension, or similar organization within the past 4 years
    • US citizen
    • minimum overall GPA of 3.0
    • Must submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member and from a leader of one of your listed volunteer organizations
     21. Frank E. Paige, Jr. Scholarship
    Available to James Wood High School, Millbrook High School, Sherando High School

    The recipient must meet the following criteria:
    • Financial need
    • Student has been accepted and plans to attend an accredited college, university or trade school
    22.  Parkinson Memorial Scholarship

    Available to: James Wood High School 

    The recipient must meet the following criteria: 

    ·            The recipient will be a graduating senior from James Wood High School with a “B” average

    ·            The recipient must be entering college in the upcoming fall in a service-related field such as teaching, nursing, social work, etc.

    ·            The scholarship is to be awarded after proof of enrollment is verified

    23.  Protect the Kids, LLC Scholarship

    Available to: James Wood, Millbrook, and Sherando High School

    The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
    • Plans to pursue a BS degree in nursing
    • Student has been accepted and plans to  attend an accredited 4 year college or university
    24. Joseph P. & Barbara Roby Memorial Scholarship
    Available to: James Wood, Millbrook, Sherando

    The recipient must meet the following criteria:

    ·   Financial need

    ·   A one page essay entitled “What Defines Christian Character”


    25. Winifred Whitacre Rogers Memorial Scholarship 

    Available to: James Wood High School 

    The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
    • The recipient will be a graduating senior from James Wood High School 
    • Plans to enter the field of education. 
    • The student should show a strong desire to excel

    26. Donald H. Shirley Scholarship 

    Available to: James Wood High School 

    The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
    • Highly motivated graduating senior from James Wood High School. 
    • Must be entering a college or university in the upcoming fall 
    • Must be of good character 
    • Set good examples for others, be honest, and possess a positive attitude. 

    27. The Wilbur C. Stivers Performing Arts Scholarship
    Available to: James Wood, Millbrook, Sherando

    The recipient must meet the following criteria:
    • Student in good standing
    • Student has been accepted and plans to attend an accredited college, university, or trade school
    • Has participated in the performing arts throught their school years (drama club, dance, music, etc)
    28. Chanel Stokes Memorial Scholarship
    Available to:  James Wood High School
    The recipient must meet the following criteria:
    • financial need
    • must have been accepted and plans to attend an accredited college, university, or trade school
    • must possess strong Christian character
    • applicartion mus include an essay (no more than 2 pages in length) entitled " How I would inspire someone to choose JOY in their most discourage of times"

    29. Patricia and Douglas Whitacre Memorial Scholarship (Scholarship #1) 

    Available to: James Wood High School and Millbrook High School and Sherando High School 

    The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
    • Graduate of a Frederick County High School 
    • Attendance in a degree program at a Virginia institution of higher learning, including vocational, training, and technical institutions 
    • Exhibits academic ability 

    30. Patricia and Douglas Whitacre Memorial Scholarship (Scholarship #2) 

    Available to: James Wood High School and Millbrook High School, and Sherando High School 

    The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
    • Graduate of a Frederick County High School 
    • Attendance in a degree program at a Virginia institution of higher learning, including vocational, training, and technical institutions 
    • Financial need and a strong desire to excel 
    31. Melton F. Wright Distinguished Service Award
    Available to: James Wood High School 

    The recipient must meet the following criteria: 
    • A graduating senior who has distinguished himself/ herself through unselfish service to school and community. 
    • The recipient does not have to be at or near the top of his/her class; service is of greater importance than scholarship in selecting the recipient.
    • must be approved by the trustees
